Together with another small neighboring island, called Aketze or rabbits' island, they form a protected biotope. The hermitage is located in the high place of an island to which it is necessary to accede across a bridge of stone and immediately afterwards a walk of 231 steps. The name of this beautiful island has two different meanings: "Gaztelu-aitz" (rock of the castle) and "Gaztelu-gache" (rough or difficult castle).

It possesses numerous archaeological deposits and historical vestiges, many of them of great value at the moment of understanding the first stadiums of the human presence in the region and uncovering its capacity of transformation of the landscape. In 1984 the Basque Government presents to the UNESCO a report based on Urdaibai's ecological integral study and requests the incorporation of this space in the program called MaB, " Man and Biosphere ", and at the end of this year Urdaibai is declared Reserve of the Biosphere.
